Here is a print screen of my Itunes Music and Movies page, this will give you an idea as to my music and movie taste: (the music goes on for pages and pages, but I figured this will give you a general idea)

Music

My current favorite music artists is Taylor Swift and Katy Perry.  I was watching that special on 60 minutes and all the people at the concert were 13-14 year old girls, but I am unapologetic, I love Taylor Swift's music.

There are a few other songs that I have always loved but I have never seen the videos.  There is a group called 98 degrees (Nick Lacey is a member of this group), and my favorite song from them is called Because of You.  But I just watched the video and for some reason it ruined the song for me, I actually enjoyed this song so much better before I watched the video.

Here is the video:

Here is another video of theirs and this video was really nice:

You can guess that work is very slow before the holidays.  Here are a few more videos of my favorite songs.  I have listened to these songs forever and they are all in my Ipod, but I have never watched most of these videos.

Life and Simplicity

I prefer a life of simplicity.  I hardly care where I live, what I drive, or what I wear.

I hate myself that I want a red Bentley Flying Spur with red interiors.  I am sure that once I get it, I will hardly care about it, just like every other thing that I have craved in the past.  I may find it beautiful and happy that I own it, but based on my past experience, I will likely lose interest in it in a very short time.

Yes, I am buying lots of real estate and as I write this entry I am making offers on a house and another condo today.  But that is not because I want them or crave them, but because I know financially I can make money from buying them.  I will rent them out for a period and once prices pick up again, I will sell them for a major profit.

I was thinking of how to make my life simpler and I think there is no way to do that.

My life is so involved in my employees and my students, there is no way I can simply leave and live a simpler life.  My dereliction of duty will affect so many other people, I could not do that.  I do not want my needs to affect people negatively that rely on me.

So I will keep the businesses growing and keep working hard and the dream of simplicity will be just that, a dream.

I was reading an article about two friends that sold there company for hundreds of millions.  One friend retired immediately and started traveling the world.  The other friend started another company and kept working.  His friend asked him why, and he said, he felt a sense of duty to his employees that were let go when they sold the company and he started another company not to make more money, but because he knew he could help his employees make a living.

I loved that story.  It would be easy for me to sell all my interests in everything that I own and live comfortably for the rest of my life.  But I will not do that, because I do feel a great sense of duty to my employees, students and my business partners.  I know that as long as I am in charge we will be successful and that success is good for everybody involved with me.

Thikka

I have three friends of mine that are extremely brilliant.  In fact I would say that they are likely 3 of the most brilliant people I know, Kiran, Goverdhan and Sujey.

But all three are very good at work and all three have this super high energy level and will work 16 hours a day if necessary.

But all three have exactly the same problem.

When I call, text or email, most of the time they are excellent and quick at communication, but once in a while they will simply not answer calls, texts or emails and will be totally incommunicado.  Then they will come up with lame excuses on why they were unavailable.

I am sure their thinking process is that, they know they are very good at what they do and they want to show their importance by not communicating.  I find that very weird.  If any one of them or for that matter anybody calls me I will pick up right away or call you back right away.  Good or bad I will always make myself available.  If I have a problem with you, I will tell you.

I called Kiran out on this and he told me that he will try and improve and he knows that this is a problem that he has.

I have to talk to Sujey and explain how frustrating it is when he does this.

I think there is no use to talk to Goverdhan, he is that way and there is absolutely no way to change him.

I think with mental brilliance comes a little, the word on Telugu that comes to mind is thikka, and in english it translates to, stubborn, but the real translation means more than just stubborn, it is stubborn with a little crazy thrown in.

You will also meet people that are brilliant, and I bet you they are just like my friends a little thikka.

Positive Thinking and Invitro

I was watching a documentary called The Secret, The Secret says that the universe is governed by a natural law called the law of attraction which is said to work by attracting into a person's life the experiences, situations, events, and people that 'match the frequency' of the person's thoughts and feelings. Therefore, positive thinking and feeling positive are claimed to create life-changing results such as increased wealth, health, and happiness.

I used to be a super positive person.

Yesterday I got this email:

The initial pregnancy test is positive! We will be checking for rising levels and get back again on Monday.

In the past I would have been super excited.  You know what my reaction this time after I had to face the disappointment from last time.  Eeehhhh.  Yes that was my reaction.  I think the extreme disappointment from last time has not left my system and I doubt I will be excited this time until the very end.

So here goes the roller coaster ride again.

Last time everyone was telling me to wait till after the 3rd month and everything is further along, but I was so sure of a positive result I was planning everything, right down to the name and color scheme of the nursery.

But I refuse to get excited this time and I will keep a wait and see approach.

I am hoping that a disappointment will not hurt me emotionally.  God knows I have been hurt enough in that arena.

By the way the documentary was stupid and I stopped watching after about 20 minutes.  The secret to success is hard work, luck and perseverance.  Sure if you are bubbly or attractive you may get more opportunities for success, but everyone in life will get opportunities and it up to you grab them.

Norman Lizt

The below was a full page ad that was in the NY Times.  (As an aside each and every one of should get the NY Times and read it every day, and stop relaying on stupid snippets of news on the internet for your news)

I read this and it made me so mad that an idiot Republicans could think that they could frighten us into voting for Republicans.  Besides my other business I also have an internet business that I could base out of any location in the world.  That business currently makes for me about $180,000 a year.  If I base that business in the Bahamas, I could make that entire money tax free if I was willing to give up my US Citizenship.  I have thought about this and also a multitude of other locations of where I could live, but after considering everything, my US Citizenship and the rule of law that is available here, it is to valuable to give up, just to save a few tax dollars.

OK, I do not make ten million dollars a year like the guy below, but especially if I had that type of money, I would want safety and security first and I could care less about taxes at that point since his lifestyle is so frugal anyway.

Of course there is waste in our government and we will have to work hard to eliminate it, but there is no way that I could give up my US Citizenship and live overseas.  The benefits of working in the system and improving USA is so much easier than to go give up on USA and go and live in some foreign country.

I have radical solutions to our problems in USA, and who knows, one day this may be the final solution:

1) Take the burden of healthcare off the citizens and our businesses and let the government provide healthcare for all of our citizens for free.  Let the pay option be there also for people that do not want to wait for a procedure or to wait to see a physician.

2) Keep Social Security no matter what the burden. We must have this safety net for our elderly.

3)  Reduce defense spending and increase the drones and other warfare technologies and reduce the defense spending by 50% over the next 10 years.

4) Bring in gun control and stop letting people buy fully automatic weapons as a start

5) Start a VAT (Value Added Tax)

6) Encourage Domestic Manufacturing - Not sure how, but we can give tax incentives for this.

7) Tax all income in just 2 flat tax rates of 10% and 25% and a 35% rate for everyone making over 1 million.

I think my ideas are a combination of both parties ideas.  But these are solution to our problems, leaving USA is not the solution.

"Why this Fat Cat Likes Obama's Tax Plan" NORMAN LIZT

Full Page ad in the NYT newspaper August 20, 2012 Full text

I certainly don't qualify for the Forbes 400 Richest Americans list, but it surely feels that way. With my income averaging close to eight figures annually for the past seven years and with personal expenditures comprising about 2% of such income(thereby qualifying me for a potential Forbes list of America's wealthiest tightwads), I have built a net worth far above anything to witch I ever aspired. I simply don't know how to spend money(nor do I enjoy doing so), having purchased only one residence (a condo) in the past 40 years, one used car in 25 years, and detest wasting my time shopping. My one passion, travel, accounts for about half my expenditures.

I find my work as a sole, private equity investor challenging and intellectually stimulating and especially enjoy mentoring and interacting with my small staff of trusted employees. My father long ago taught me that individuals are nothing more than custodians of their funds, ultimately to passed down to future generations, especially the less fortunate. I have taken this to heart and have aspired to a legacy goal of ultimately leaving $50 million to various charities. And with continued good fortune, perhaps higher.

My one significant regret (profoundly shared by my fiancee, Rachel Martin) is that my diligent and compulsive pursuit of my goals does not leave enough time to smell the rose. She wishes to travel more and she may very well achieve her wish! Assuming Barack Obama wins reelection and successfully achieves his redistributionist tax agenda ( with 39%+ marginal rates plus a 3.8% tax on investment income plus substantially high dividend and capital gains rates), I will find myself, when my high California taxes are added in, at a marginal rate of taxation well over 50%. This represents the crossing of an inviolate threshold to me and is entirely unacceptable. I realize paying taxes is a form of charitable giving in a sense, but if I'm the one that's doing the work and tendering the money, then I want to be the one who chooses the charity.

Consequently, should these tax laws go into effect, I probably will simply shutter my business and say my sweet farewells to half a dozen great employees (who are unlikely to equal their current remuneration elsewhere... if they are fortunate enough to get new jobs in this economy). I will then take my money and instead of productively employing it in venture capital, will stick it in short-term U>S. Treasuries, providing me with a moderately safe, extremely low-yielding investment on which the high tax rates are moot since there's virtually no income to tax.

And Rachel will get her dream come true, since I will finally be free of my compulsive financial pursuits, and health permitting we will live the luxurious lifestyle we both feel we deserve.

To the many charities which ultimately will have to settle for about half of what they could have received... my profound and deepest apologies. For the medical innovations which may be years delayed, the music which may never be performed, the shelter that might not be offered, I grieve. To Barack Obama, I say thank you... for freeing me form the yoke and bondage of my current endeavors and providing a new found freedom. I just hope, however, that there are not thousands and thousands of others in the same position as I am in... the multiplier effect on jobs, the economy and charitable giving could be devastating!

Rocky Mountaineer

I was reading about the great rail trips of the world and one of the trips that came up was the Rocky Mountaineer.  It is a 2 day trip from Vancouver to Calgary or vice versa.

Since the labor day weekend was coming up, I had four trips in mind:

1) Sujey has invited me to come to a cabin on the lake with their family. - The Kallumadanda family is always a little rambunctious  and fun to hang with.  Of course any activities on the lake such as Jet Skiing is always fun.

2) Taking the Rocky Mountaineer Trip - A 2 day train trip from Vancouver to Calgary.

3) Go to Niagara Falls - I know I went as a little kid, but I do not remember them at all.

4) Go and hang out with Dr Bobby - I did not tell Bobby that I was coming, but I figured I would invite myself to Orlando to hang with the kids.  It is always fun to hang out with Bobby.

Of these I was leaning towards the Rocky Mountaineer.  Here were the testimonials:

Spectacular doesn't even adequately describe the scenery. The accommodations were fabulous! The food was to die for! The service was beyond stellar!

Like I said it is supposed to be the most beautiful train trip in the entire world.

So I started looking up the price and for the 2 day trip it would cost $2000 per person just for the train trip.  Then the Indian side of me came alive and said wooooo.  I mean come on, $10,000 is almost meaningless to me, so you figured for the wife and I for a 4 day trip including flights and 1 day in Vancouver and then the train ride and then an additional 2 days to discover Calgary would cost at most $10,000.

I think I am still Indian, because the cost to me seemed way too high for a train trip.

I have not made up my mind on what to do for Labor Day, but I will make a decision soon.  I am hoping that I choose the Rocky Mountaineer, since it is supposed to be the most beautiful train trip in the world.  But then the Indian side is competing heavily in me to go to Niagara Falls, since we can do this for $500.

Hummm.  $500 vs $10,000 for an experience.   Hummm.

Vijay do not be a cheap ass, just do it.   Hummmmmmmmmmmm.

The wife is pushing for Niagara Falls, she likes to see a lot of money in her bank and feels safe that way.  She was relatively poor in her first marriage and I think she remembers the tough times.

Hummmmmmmmmmm.

Fantasy Football League

I am in one fantasy football league already and the buy in was $100 each and we have 12 people in the league and I have been trying to get the guys to increase the buy in so that more people take the league more seriously, but I have been unable to do so.  By the way I have never won anything in my league, but I like for people to take it seriously.  Everyone takes way to long on trade decisions and there are very few trades that ever happen.  I always start with a great team but I am decimated by injuries.  I need a little bit of luck and I think this year I can win.

So to make the league more exciting I have chipped in $2000 into the prize pool so that there is a total of $3200 in the prize pool.  Let us see if this makes a difference in the league as far as attitudes.

I have a bunch of American in this league and it always amazes me that they think that I am crazy for chipping in $2000.  I really enjoy Fantasy Football and to make something I love more competitive, fun and interesting, I chipped in the money.  On a single night of playing cards I have lost more than $10,000 so me chipping in $2,000 is not a big deal.  I do not want any benefit for chipping in the $2000, all I want is for everyone to take the league a little more seriously.

I have started a new league in Yahoo called VXL Football League with the same $100 buy in.  I have invited a lot of my friends and this should be fun.  In case I did not send the invite out to you or you also want to play, send me an email and I will send an invite out to you.

Cars Land Set

(The day has finally come, leaving tomorrow for vacation, yeah!)

The vacation to Cars Land in CA is all set.  I will be there from September 18-21 in Anaheim CA.

Just bought the flight tickets and booked the hotel reservation.

We will be staying at Disney Grand Californian Hotel and Spa during our stay.  I figured staying at the Disney hotel will allow us to get in early for Cars Land.

December Vacation

December is a very light month for us as far as work, so for the entire month of December I will be in Paradise Island in the Bahamas.  To my employees, I maybe out of town, but I will be available by cell phone and email the entire time, so I will still be available to solve any issues.

To my friends and family, I am getting a very nice rental in Nassau Bahamas that will sleep up to 6 people.  If anybody wants to join us in the month of December, reserve your space now.  Please call or email me with your plans and I will save space for you.  You had better do it soon, I am sure that there is going to be big demand during Christmas time.

Real Estate and the 10 Year Rule

I have a ten year rule that I apply to every real estate investment that I make.

My Rule is Simple - Normally in commercial real estate, loans are given out over 10 years.  Either as interest only and then a balloon payment or like a typical housing loan just for 10 years.  So the rule is simple, currently with a 10 year mortgage will the property be in the range of cash flow neutral to a loss of 3% per year on  net asset value.

To put that simpler here is an example of an office building that I actually bought.

I bought an office building in El Paso TX for $400,000.  We put 10% down and had a mortgage for $360,000 which meant that we were paying about $5000 a month on that loan to pay it off in 10 years.  As long as this building was making up to $4000 a month in rent then it would be fine to buy.

The calculation is simple: 3% of $400,000 is $12,000.  If the rent received is $4000 for a total of $48,000 plus a loss of $12,000 a year for a total of $60,000 it would cover the mortgage.

It has been about ten years since I bought that building.  It is currently worth $600,000 and the rent we are getting is between $5000 to $6000 per month.  So for the $400,000 investment the net return is currently between 15-18%, a fabulous return.

But to get to this stage any property you buy, you need to look at it in the long term with a horizon of 10 years.  You will likely lose money or break even at best for 10 years, but after that you and your heirs are set for life.

Anyway Bobby and I had bought this building together, but I lost it in the divorce.  But I am happy for Bobby that it has turned into a cash cow now.

This is a great time to buy commercial real estate, but make sure to buy it in high end area.  Almost everything I have seen is selling for less a lot less than replacement cost.

I am looking and if I find something I will buy it.  It will be a struggle for 10 years while the mortgage is there, but once it is over, it will be a great investment to own.

I know some people have a rule in real estate that says that if it stinks, it smells like money, but in the current market, I do not think that applies.  Looks for solid properties with a 10 year time horizon.

Disciplining a Kid, Really?

I was just walking Kumo at 9:30 PM and it was pitch black at night.  We made a right at the bottom of the drive way.  He was scared of the fireworks recently and he would go about 4-5 house pee on a few trees, poop and then we would come home.  Recently he has been getting better, since there has not been any fireworks and we kept walking.

In the map above A is my house.  Like I said we made a right at the bottom of the driveway on to Argyle street and we kept going and we got to Argyle and White Pines and we kept going straight on Argyle.  About halfway down, the sidewalk ends and we had to cross the road to get to the other side of Argyle.  We got to the corner house, this guy always has this huge American Flag flying on a very large pole, always.  Right when we got to the house a dad put outside the house a young girl about 5-6 years old.  The girl is scream at the top of the lungs, in between screaming she is saying, "let me in dad", more screaming, and this is high pitched screaming at the top of her lungs.  Kumo stops and starts whimpering, I told him it is OK and to keep walking.  He takes a few steps and then stops and whimpers again.

I hear her dad say something, not sure what, but the girl start screaming, "I can't calm down", "let me back in."

This screaming went on till we got to White Hall and we had to make a left to head back home.  At that point it finally stopped.

Obviously it was some sort of discipline method that the dad had, and I am sure he knew what he was doing, but boy that was unsettling.

Password and Computer Search

I have removed every trace of my ex-wife from my computer and phone, this means, every email, every picture, every phone number, everything.

In fact here is a search of my computer:

Seems like the only mention is on the taxes for 2007 for the Dallas property and that I cannot help, but I keep it for my records. (click on the picture to get a full view)

Here is a search of my email and this is in all emails including folders and sub-folders: (click on the picture to get a full view)

So why was this done?

I decided that she has become a different person than the one that I knew, and there is no reason to even try to ever get a point of cordial friendship.  So I have eliminated her from my life completely.

I will not acknowledge her, I will not mention her name, I simply will not mention her ever again.  In fact this is the very last entry you will see about this.

I have given her the password to the blog in case she wants to change or remove anything.  I sent it to the old email address, but I have not seen any changes, but I will give her till the end of the month after which I will change it to a new password.

Happiness

I would guess that what everyone searches for is ultimately, happiness.  I have been thinking about this long and hard.  What would make me happy?

I think each and every year this list changes.  For the last few years, I used to feel like having my own child would make me happy.  But I do not think that is on my list anymore.  Yes, yes I am still trying, but it is almost an afterthought and not really expecting success.

I used to be a very happy person and I forgot why it was that I was happy.

It seems to me like life has become this daze and each day keeps blending into the next.  Once is a while I think about just leaving to go and live in the Caribbean and open a Jet Ski rental place.  I though that this was funny in its own way, even when I run off somewhere, I think about opening a business there.

But I have too much responsibility and I cannot simply leave.

Don't get me wrong here, I am not sad either.  But that feeling of pure happiness is missing.

Is this normal and does everyone think like I do?

Buying Stock

For the longest time I have been investing in businesses and other long term assets.  I now have 3 solid businesses  and I am happy with the profitability and growth in all of them.  Over the last few years I kept putting most of the profits from my businesses back into the businesses.

I have finally reached a stage where there is nothing else I can really invest in as far as my current businesses and I will have to finally start taking profits out of the businesses.

I want to accumulate liquid assets and I want to have $1,000,000 within 2 years, I am  going to buy $50,000 a month of stock for the next 12 months and I want to only buy 1 stock a month.  I thought long and hard about what I want to buy and here is the list in order that I will be buying going forward.

I actually have given hundreds of thousands of cash in loans to my friends, but anytime I have needed it and wanted it back, every single person has been unable to give it back to me, so I will not be lending out cash anymore to anyone until I have $1,000,000 in liquid assets saved up.

I think I have reached a stage where all I need to do is to protect the money I have and not really take any big risks to make money.

Every company on my list is a company that I admire.  I would have put JPM on this list but after the recent blowup in London, there is no way to trust JPM anymore, so they are off my list.  There were a lot of companies that I really want to add to this list, but for now this is the list.

I have done lots of research and I got this list based on me never having to worry about a stock I buy.  My thought process is that I can buy these companies and not have to worry over the next 10-20 years.  I know the old buy and hold strategy is dead, but that is my plan.  I am going to buy these companies and hold them over the next 10-20 years.  I want to be able to live on dividend income after a few years and I figure this will a step in that direction.

I will be buying over the next 12 months:

BRK-B - Berkshire
DIS - Disney
MMM - 3M
GE - GE
MSFT - Microsoft
F - Ford
INFY - Infosys
AXP - American Express
CAT - Caterpillar
GOOG - Google
JNJ - Johnson and Johnson
DOW - Dow Chemical

Month 13-24 stock buys is:

SAP - SAP
LNKD - LinkedIn
EMC - EMC
ADBE - Adobe
XOM - Exxon
AA - Alcoa
NUAN - Nuance
AH - Accretive Health
COST - Costco
KO - Coke
MCD - McDonalds
PG - Procter & Gamble

A few comments have already come about my list and why I have a company like Accretive Health on my list, since it does not fit my model of buying and not worrying about it.  Accretive Health has major allegations of fraud by a few states.  I know all this, but I was sitting on a flight next to an Accretive Health employee and she was so passionate about the company and what they do and was defending the CEO, Mary Tolan with such vigor, that I got interested in this company and even though it does not fit my mantra of stocks that I should own, I am going to buy them also.

I have also had a lot of advice about  Dollar cost averaging, and buying all 24 stocks every month for $2000 each so that I do not get hurt in case the market moves one way or the other on a few stocks.

I understand about dollar cost averaging and I will think about it, it is a good idea.  It is amazing that I have so much input on the blog entry after just 1 day and very little input on all the other entries.

Cars Land

I have a friend that has a 4 year old son and he loves the Disney Movie, Cars.  Thinking that it is going to be super fun we are going to Cars Land and the town of Radiator Springs in Anaheim CA.

We will likely be going in the next few months.  Date is not officially set yet, but it will be done soon.

I think it will be so much fun to go with a Super Fan.  His excitement and wonder will be what will be so fun about it.

On a map my friend’s son knows where India is, and he knows where America is, but he keeps on asking about Radiator Springs and where that is on a Map, so it will be fun to take him there and show him.

Here are a few of the attractions at Cars Land:

  • Radiator Springs Racers — a slot car dark ride. The attraction takes guests in a six-person vehicle through a briefing with Doc and Lighting McQueen, characters from the film Cars. Suddenly, guests find themselves racing another guest vehicle through hairpin turns and steep banks, ending with a randomized race result.

  • Mater's Junkyard Jamboree — an attraction in the style of a whip ride and the Mad Tea Party at Disneyland. The attraction is themed to Mater's Junkyard and the fields with baby tractors from the first film. Mater is the Master of Ceremonies of the Jamboree. The vehicles are tractors with pull cars attached to them that move around with the music

  • Luigi's Flying Tires — an updated version of the original Disneyland attraction, Flying Saucers. This effect is achieved by large fan-like blowers shooting air up, like a giant air hockey table. Guests queue in the Casa Della Tires shop. A play area featuring a tire jungle gym, slide and kid-sized cars is located next to the attraction

Cancun Mexico

We are going to Cancun Mexico on April 5-14th, 2013.  I know that it is a long way off, but I am crazy excited already.

We are staying at some place called Moon Palace, and it looks to be a beautiful place:

Moon Palace Link

Here are a few pictures of the place:

Here is Video of the place:

If any of my friends would like to join us, it would be awesome.  So far I have talked to Subbu and he said that he will come and California Bobby will come for 2-3 days also.  Time to make it into an old school get together and get everybody to come.  Bobby said that he will talk to Ravi and see if he can get him to come also.

Yeah!!
